Hyrum's finger incident

Hyrum has been so great with his cast.  He was able to go in the sprinkler with a bag on it, and been in very little pain.  Today we went to check out if the finger had taken.  We want to see black.

I never thought I would be so thrilled to see something so gross!  It took, so now we put him back in a mitten cast for another week and he will have a special splint made to protect his finger for the MONTHS to follow.  Yes, I said months.  Thank you to modern medicine so my son can have a whole finger.

The day after Memorial Day, Hyrum got his finger shut in the hinge side of the door when his sister slammed it shut.  He pulled it free and the tip of his finger came off in the door jam.  Talk about a crazy morning.  It was about 7am and Doug was already on his way to work.  I heard the kids chasing each other and then Hyrum came in crying saying his finger was hurt.  There was very little blood, so I went in for closer look and was shocked to see the bone sticking out of his pinky finger.

It took a few minutes to find out exactly what happened and then figure out that it was the "other" side of the door.  I kept asking, "where is the finger?"  Lo and behold, the tip was still in the jam.  I've watched enough television to know I should put it in ice, so that's what I did.  I kept my cool so far.

I got on the phone with Doug and told him to turn around and meet me at the ER.  I loaded the other kids in the car, not realizing they were in their pjs and barefoot, and called my mom to meet us there also.  Thank goodness she beat me there, so I didn't have to walk in with all my kids looking like ragamuffins.  She took the girls home and we waited.

We were comforted when the resident came in and said that this was fairly common. (who knew?) and she had done similar procedures several times.  She carefully sewed the finger tip back on with 5 stitches and told us that we would meet with a hand specialist the following day.

We were told that Hyrum's fingertip would serve as an organic bandage for the time being while the skin underneath healed and grew up over the bone.  What we wanted was for the tip to take to the finger so he didn't have to have surgery to stimulate skin growth.  He was so brave throughout everything.  I think he cried hardest for his penecillin shot in the leg.  They put a mitten cast over all of his fingers except his thumb to protect him from infection and getting moisture inside.  He was such a brave boy and will have an awesome story to tell someday!

Summer hike

Took the kids on a hike for Memorial Day with the Baldwins.  Did some geocaching and picnicked near the falls.  It was a beautiful day and more fun for the kids since they had friends to chat with.

Cannon Beach Getaway

Doug goes down to the coast often for work, so I tagged along this time. It was the least I could do.  After all it was his birthday.  We went to the Wayfarer for dinner and I did lots of shopping.

Gabby soccer

We love going to soccer games.  Gabby has gotten pretty aggressive and loves the game.  Here she is her first season.
